In the Tolerance Test installation, the whimsical and flamboyant fantasy creatures of the Rotterdam artist Charlotte Schleiffert have gathered in a circle. Is it a ritual performance, a fraternizing gathering or will it end in a murderous brawl? It will turn out, because as a spectator you can take a seat in the middle.
Charlotte Schleiffert, an internationally renowned artist, is celebrated for her stunning portraits and the personal and powerful view her work provides on global inequality. For decades, Schleiffert has fantasized about hybrid creatures: people she encounters on the street, virtuosically crossed with celebrities from film, television or photos from newspapers and magazines. The grotesque types − painted larger than life on large drawings − are born from collages of times, styles, cultures and genders.
A special presentation of Tolerance Test will take place on Saturday 11 February (7.30 pm) and Sunday 12 February (12.00 pm), in which the exhibition forms the subject and backdrop of a special theater performance. This performance is played by actress Kimberley Agyarko. The performance (60 minutes) consists of a succession of scenes in which Agyarko is confronted with the voices of Charlotte Schleiffert's fantasy creatures: philosophers, identities from the past, opinions, media expressions. How does the actress relate to this from her own identity and background? Through Agyarko, the audience experiences what inequality can look like, with the text partly based on the actress's own experiences.
