Inside the orange-coloured climate box in Schiehal A on the site of the Van Nelle Ontwerpfabriek, you get the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at the Nieuwe Instituut's Open Model Depot. The Open Model Depot, normally not open to the public, houses the largest scale models from the Nieuwe Instituut’s collection. Of the more than 2,500 models taken care by the institute, 700 models by MVRDV, Francine Houben, Le Corbusier, OMA, JJP Oud and Luzia Hartsuyker-Curjel, among others, are on display here.
A variety of materials are used such as egg shells, 3d printed techniques, blue foam, plaster, matchboxes and more. During the opening, it is possible to wander through the depot surrounded by the various models with a guide. In addition, visitors can watch conservation and registration work executed by collection managers.
